Thread: Ubuntu Crashed and Cannot Re-install

just other day, 1 of laptops wouldn't start up, duel booting windows vista, , kept getting grub bash line screen. i've gotten before, , resulted in uninstalling ubuntu , re-installing. well, when attempting uninstall, received error missing file, , wouldn't finish.

when booting up, boots straight windows, sign ubuntu no longer there. so, tried install again, there no option install windows. i've tried both wubi , livecd, , don't want wipe hard drive @ all.

i've looked partitioning, , when attempting partition hd, said "creating new partition wipe hard drive", didn't go option. i've tried other linux os's, such linux mint 11, centos, , debian 6, , had "wipe , install" features available.

can please help? i'd have ubuntu running on machine, @ same time keep windows (i hate windows, use audio production , pc games).

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
