if choose ubuntu run application inside windows put on separate partition, , have dual boot, windows still running in background?

i afraid there slight misunderstanding on side.

(1) ubuntu inside virtual machine run windows
way of running ubuntu inside windows by
+ creating virtual machine
+ install ubuntu in virtual machine
+ launch virtual machine running ubuntu
in case, windows running while ubuntu is. yet, ubuntu not have partition of own. instead virtual machine use large disk file virtual disk, , ubuntu see disk owned virtual machine , use it.
in case, ubuntu runs inside windows - hm, sort of - yet, not have own partition. nor dual boot system.

(2) ubuntu , windows in own partition(s) - real dual boot system
if create separate partition ubuntu , install on own dedicated partition, may choose on each boot whether run windows or ubuntu. never , running @ same time.
in case, have real dual boot system. both, ubuntu , windows, have own dedicated partition(s). @ point in time, 1 of 2 operating systems running, either windows or ubuntu, never both.

(3) ubuntu on windows partition - wubi installation
last there - may have in mind - wubi installation. start ubuntu installation launching file wubi.exe while windows running. wubi start ubuntu installation. create 2 pseudo disks on (one of) windows partition(s): swap.disk , root.disk. both pseudo disks large files. swap.disk later on used ubuntu memory swap space. root.disk pseudo disk wubi create ubuntu file system , install ubuntu system.
performing wubi installation, have dual boot system, too. can either boot windows or ubuntu. again, either windows , running or ubuntu, never both @ same time.
