Width tool not working

the width tool not seem work @ on anything,

we had same problem @ work, decided try , finish project off work , assumed computer there buggy,

i've googled , 1 other person seemed have same problem, , corrected changing stroke inside (which tried on seperate shape , did not work, trying change width of stroked path)

i have tried expand it.

all , appreciated , other tools work fine. using cs6

what stroke? width tool operates on basic brush strokes, not art brushes or of that... provide screenshots clarify...

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
