a video clip that works fine in windows media player but not in Premiere

i have avi video clip file recorded old vhs tape many years back. file plays fine in windows media player when import latest version of premiere pro cs6 video portion shows nothing green screen. audio track plays fine. i've tried using adobe media encoder change variety of different formats. don't produce file , don't work differently original within premiere. suggestions?

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
