After Effects CS6 Audio Preview Issue

i baffled on one. audio preview function in after effects isn't working @ all, whether try play sound on own or within composition. tried importing file , applying tone effect layer, neither of played either.

 

i have checked can think of. sound on clip enabled, waveforms should. sound works fine when open file program. tried playing , without headphones plugged in volume way up, still nothing.

whether scrub through holding ctrl, hit (.) or use ram preview, no sound comes out.

audio preview enabled.

visually audio levels fluctuate here should, no actual sound comes out. mute isn't on, can see there. here file itself:

when tried rendering, sound there in output file. it's previewing sound within ae isn't working. need sync sound , animation project pretty debilitating far work goes. closed ae, restarted, etc., nothing changed. seems there must place audio preview isn't enabled out of ideas , no fixes found on forum far have helped. if has ideas i'd grateful hear them.

i'd check preferences - audio , audio settings on system. speaking of system os? kind of sound device?
