Thread: Can't login to Xfce session in Ubuntu 11.10

so, had installed xfce before, when messing around desktop environments, got busy again, , decided uninstall it. purged/removed many xfce-related files possible, , deleted /usr/share/xsessions/xfce.desktop rm. reinstalled xfce, can't login xfce session. help/suggestions?

try re-install (in place)
cat /usr/share/xsessions/xfce*
cat /usr/share/xsessions/xubuntu*
see if results

if not open root terminal , re-create following contents:

[desktop entry] version=1.0 name=xfce session comment=use session run xfce desktop environment exec=startxfce4 icon= type=application
if fails 'completely remove' xfce , it's components & re-install re-try

or try install:
xubuntu-desktop

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
