desktop effects worked without problem in natty. when upgraded oneiric, 1 of many problems in worst of upgrades far stopped working. verified not problem personal settings: desktop effects still work flawlessly in live kubuntu 11.04, , not in live 11.10. message effects: blur, box switch, cover switch, desktop cube, dashboard, desktop grid, dialog parent, fade, highlight window, login, logout, minimize animation, outline, present windows, screenshot, slide, sliding popups, starting feedback, taskbar thumbnails, translucency , zoom had turned off.

i have intel core i3 540 @ 3.07 ghz integrated graphics card , no additional graphics card. have 16gb of ram.

possible use older version of xserver or kwin can use desktop effects? not fan of compositing, since compositing became standard, switching off leaves interface ugly resembling pure tcl/tk.

issue 1 of several have worst version of kubuntu ever:

1. after attempts change effects (perhaps), can no longer log in immediately. process plasma-desktop sleeps 5 minutes before can see desktop. in personal settings, new test users don't have effect, don't know setting is.
2. new users have change password first time log in. however, cannot first time popup window shows - keyboard input blocked. second time (i press escape) entering password interrupted after short delay - looks short timeout. happens in kdm.
3. i use kdm regard new gdm , lightdm (or so) insecure show list of users. however, contrary previous versions, there seems no way specify kde default window manager (not in e.g. .dmrc). should in control center! seems impossible choose session type keyboard; have use mouse that.
4. invoking firefox crushes window manager, , i'm returned kdm.
5. miro , vlc crash desktop-plasma.
6. konqueror freezes minute, when opening new tab flash content. scrolling stops working - moving slidebars or pressing pgup/pgdn moves bars, not contents. btw, upgrade of adobe flash plugin installer time ago (2 months ago?) made watching flash video impossible in konqueror. corrected in 11.10, not in 10.04, supposed stable version (i use on different computer).

which graphics card have? p.s. can find out typing terminal

it's possible need graphics card drivers. can install them automatically using jockey: k menu > applications > system > additional drivers.
if jockey doesn't display anything, or displays have graphics driver activated, tell us. in case you'll need find out gpu is.

agree. kubuntu 11.10 sucks. stuck 11.04. don't know i'm going once runs out of life.
