Thread: Fully Erase Windows & Before Installing Ubuntu

i have old desktop , old laptop, both running xp seldom used. give these extended life; give 1 away , install other in holiday cottage general use. want ensure there no possible remnants of confidential data might recoverable. there no data need.
considered darik's boot , nuke clean hdds, install ubuntu wonder whether may loose vital new installation. have eraser can sure i've covered everywhere possibly contain personal data?
i'd welcome recommendations best procedure.
far have used try function run ubuntu cd. disadvantages of installing alongside windows until more familiar linux, apart wasted hdd space?

formatting , running dban or similar tools on write drive. may consider running several passes , repartition , format, perform install.

using gparted live cd can delete drive partition(s) , create new 1 covering entire drive.

installing alongside windows, installation handle that.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
