Thread: hard drive crapped out

i have dell vostro laptop , have had 2 years.
have had various linux distros on curently running mint 9 on it. 2 weeks ago dell crapped out on me have not had time tool around until now.
fortunately have older , seemingly more robust computer have been using online.
unfortunately have lot of files on dell computer never got around backing , need recover.

late 1 night 2 weeks ago had finished image file in gimp friend , had emailed her.
decided go walk , came see computer off(i had left on)

when pressed power button blue bar took long time fill , when did went screen gave bunch of technical jargon on believe hard drive
say..........
os not found
did manage boot live cd , after did able normal boot logged normal setup
files...(wish had thumb drive ready)
crashed.
have been trying find drive in live mode no luck
tried following this
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windo...dows-computer/
exception i'm not running windows.
unfortunately not see drives mount.
nothing shows except on live disk.
i'm afraid drive dead.
if has suggestions or fixes grateful.

fdisk or gparted should show drives accessible.
if disk isn't recognised there, should try recovery software (but haven't found recommend).

if can bios display, should able tell whether considers drive found - forget whether os not found message comes bios or first stage boot hdd.
