Thread: Installation Issue - Change MBR without Grub?

this first time trying i'm plodding around forums trying guess @ right keywords use see if there's problem.

did installation using wubi on xp, got problem i've found others have, can't use solution (selecting esc, insert, grub) because sophos primary boot loader. also, when use livecd cannot find hard drive because it's encrypted. want change mbr record i'm not sure how it. i'm not sure wubi install on xp encrypted drive work , if should instead try create separate partition rather wubi in.

1. used wubi
2. inside xp
3. single drive partition type: hpfs/ntfs/exfat
4. encrypted drive
5. sophos, not grub, primary boot loader
6. upon startup ubuntu drops common error (below). cannot find root drive
7. wanted edit mbr point sda1 (correct name)
8. cannot use grub sophos controlling
9. livecd not seem find root drive !!!

questions:
1. on encrypted hd (laptop) wubi install work?
2. can change mbr other way either directly xp or copying ubuntu installation , editing there?

(obviously don't want run of tools fix grub installation clobber xp sophos boot loader or pooch things so...)





ubuntu startup issue:

gave waiting root device. common problems:
-boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
-check rootdelay= (did system wait long enough?)
-check root= (did system wait right device?)
-missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
alert! /dev/sdb1 not exist. dropping shell!
(initramfs)

first off, wubi installation not change mbr -- because uses windows boot loader manage os selection.

second, not install grub. break something.

if windows os menu not include entry ubuntu, went wrong during installation.

don't use wubi, don't know if wubi installer work when encryption in way.
