Thread: Updating 11.10
i have started ubuntu 11.10
i've had issues during installation (on older desktop) on last week including after first time did complete install, updating important security updates (there 285) started receive 'crashes.' little time due shift work , young family decided start on again, complete re-install, ubuntu working (using now) fearful updating , suffering time consuming crahes again. little i've gathered of ubuntu far......
.....my questions in relation are;
1. rather use update manager appears able updates @ once, can use piece of software breakdown updates , install in smaller batches such synaptic package manager ? thinking if crashes commence can 'wind back' smaller batch of updates narrow down problem to.
2. start using command line ? solve problems, there link guide please?
3. 1 problem feel caused crash may have been when viewing youtube, maybe nvidia fx5500 graphics card?? standard/recommended drivers installed noticed on installation, updating recommended?
many thanks
hi & welcome forums,
update manager allow select few updates @ time, batches of updates if wish.
there number of command line tutorials out there, 1 gives basics here: http://linuxcommand.org/learning_the_shell.php
if want troubleshooting tips, commands use depend on nature of problemexample, commands "ps -ae" give list of running processes, , "kill" followed process id allows terminate them. useful stopping troublesome processes.
"strace" new toy of choice tracing files program opens, , system calls it's making (it's satisfying inner (and outer) geek).
"lsof" lists open files, , excellent seeing processes using files, read man pages because standard output bit long!
finally, there issues standard install of flash, try searching forums here. there many useful tips how remove , reinstall flash with, or without, repositories.
