linux distributions gnu/linux operating system default set of programs or applications installed. because gnome default desktop environment both ubuntu , debian, similar. similarly, ubuntu uses debian (.deb) files package installation can borrow many of it's programs debian repositories.
in mind makes ubuntu, ubuntu, is designed easy use end user. means canonical has put lot of work things video card driver installation, fonts, etc. seems little bit nicer , more polished.
furthermore, ubuntu has great community of users. users make ubuntu is. i've found these forums useful learning how use gnu/linux effectively, , of people out here users.
answer question, software wise, yes difference in programs installed in default installation. debian, ubuntu, fedora , many others includes gnome desktop environment heavily determines how looks. other distributions use other desktop environments. there configuration differences go on behind scenes less noticeable people aren't power users.
1 other difference ubuntu has shorter release cycle. means releases new version more (new programs). makes more cutting edge, there trade-off against stability that. debian stable pretty rock solid os.
