Why is my black and white photos being converted to colour when exporting from my camera to lr4

why black , white photos being converted colour when exporting camera lightroom 4?

when shooting raw, camera settings ignored/cannot read lightroom. notable exception white balance. , these settings metadata anyway, not integral part of file itself.

 

it's different jpeg, processed in-camera , these settings baked irreversibly file.

 

as long camera has bayer filter array in front of sensor, raw file contains color information, processed raw converter. if file flagged b/w, camera manufacturer's proprietary raw converter automatically turns b/w. lightroom can't read flag.

 

in case you're better off doing b/w conversion in lightroom, instead of accepting camera version, because can adjust brightness individual colors. gives more control:

 

a few genuine black , white cameras exist, leica monochrom. these cameras lack bayer filter array.
