Thread: How much to install/configure for VM to work well?

i wanted try installing vm system on pc. however, i'm not sure how of ubuntu should installed (as host) make things work. assume i'll able install ubuntu or windows vm. should leave host bare-bones system, or install servers such apache or samba? partitions, boot managers. old kernals, data drives, etc.?

there couple of questions need answer make decision.

first is, virtualizing systems desktop use, or wanting create virtual servers? desktop play, can pretty whatever want host. virtualize of os'es play in, , use pretty bare bones host system, though entirely preference. desktop usage recommend vmware or virtualbox. if virtualizing older os'es may wish use kvm, instance know rhel 3 won't run in vbox.

if want create virtual servers recommend kvm or xen hypervisor. , nothing installed on host.

truthfully, don't need additional software other hypervisor installed virtualize, may ultimate answer question.
