Thread: Ubuntu in Virtual Box and now want to clone to bootable USB
hi,
trying search through forums i'm not having luck finding threads solve issue.
goal:
have ubuntu installed on virtualbox image , i'd periodically clone partition usb drive when i'm on road.
method:
1. installed virtualbox on vista
2. created new virtualbox partition , installed ubuntu 11.04 , got set how it
4. mounted 16gb usb
5. ran dd make copy of image 16gb usb. took long time! (side question, if wanted leave space fat partition copying files can still edit partitions later or should have done first?)
6. validate copy , i'm able see files on usb drive.
problem:
except cannot figure out how usb drive boot. if restart computer drive, it's not recognized bootable.
found link:
http://www.arsgeek.com/2008/01/22/ho...another-drive/
, mentions grub, created new virtualbox image , boot using ubuntu live cd iso, "try ubuntu" , grub not appear installed. sudo apt-get install grub, installs ok, can see usb drive mounted when run grub:
$sudo grub
grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
error 15: file not found
i'm not sure go here. having trouble getting google point me in right direction.
also, once drive boot, if dd main image usb drive again, have repeat whatever steps required make drive bootable?
ok issue grub no longer used in 11.04. it's grub2 , there no stage 1 file. found grub 2 documentation , see happens. ill update solution once figure out exact steps.
