Transform Gradient Tool center pt keeps appearing on the left edge of the stage and it's annoying..

i'm editing gradients in small areas.  when want edit gradient fill of small shape, have zoom way out because center of gradient on left edge of stage somewhere.  i'm getting little tired of dragging center point on small area requiring fill. 

 

occasionally transform gradient tool appear within zoomed in area i'm working in i'm unsure why!  tips out there friends?

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
