Thread: 11.10 Ubuntu/unity: open file in terminal

hi
i'm new ubuntu-linux , terminals, , i'm trying bit bit learn how use terminal. i've learned (re-)installing, updating, , such. 1 thing irritates me: how open file in 11.10 ?

searched bit , found answers like
gnome-open filename.xxx
doesn't me not having gnome

found out general solution of
xdg-open xxfilename.xxfileappendix
suits me fine - it's can't work. if type out whole directory, looses point of opening file in terminal quicker use mouse..

know it's out there, , answer simple - but: how ?

cheers /steffen

i wrong here, aren't supposed direct gnome-open or kde-open right directory?

can use 'autocompletion' of directories , files using tab key in terminal...

e.g. if want open file paper.pdf on desktop (using kde) type:
kde-o tab --> autocompletes kde-open
de tab --> autocompletes directory desktop
p tab --> autocompletes filename paper.pdf
