Thread: Do gnome and kde run off a terminal emulator?

i've been curious while. when installed arch-linux had screw around .xinitrc file , include line exec gnome run automatically. ubuntu work same way? guess i'm asking behind desktop manager there terminal session running everything? can kill terminal session, if kill terminal session, kill child processes?

the system starts different things when starts up, , no, these aren't running off terminal emulator, rather linux system. can kill programs. see programs running, either open system monitor, or type:

top
<enter>

terminal.

in top, show pid. kill pid, run:
kill pidnumber

careful kill, things running important system.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
