Thread: Hostname not reachable from Windows

i have ubuntu 10.04 lts server running on asus p5p43td motherboard. asus motherboard has onboard atheros gigabit nic decided upgrade dedicated intel gigabit nic. nic installation , detection went fine new nic (as expected) detected eth1 (onboard was/is eth0). new nic has statically assigned ip matched old nic. server runs headless , managed on network via webmin. using onboard nic able browse http://hostname:10000/ access webmin interface. once changed nic intel card no longer access server hostname. system accessible ip (ie. 192.168.1.2). if switch onboard nic, works before, can browse samba shares hostname , connect webmin hostname. there anyway make system see eth1 connection same hostname eth0. tried disabling onboard connection in bios system still sees new intel nic eth1? linux problems beyond me, solution reload server, pita. suggestions?

seems found solution. or @ least seems solution. in /etc/nsswitch.conf file there line this.

code:
hosts: files mdns4_minimal [notfound=return] dns mdns4
seemed little weird changed line read this.

code:
hosts: files mdns4_minimal dns mdns4
now when server box given ip on either eth0 or eth1 able browse hostname. worth try else having hostname resolving issues.

on side note, after testing iperf intel nic provides 100 mbps less bandwidth onboard atheros nic (843 mbps vs. 940 mbps). intel nic's being faster.
