Thread: New life to an old laptop

so since bought gf macbook last christmas, i've periodically used old dell lat. 600m (1.5ghz pen. m, 512mb, 60gb 5.4k rpm hd) tote around on vacation upload photos , browse web. has sentimental value in it, keep around.

running ubuntu (11.10), thing dog slow. christmas year, asked following:

http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82e16820208529
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82e16812186098

old hard drive in thing averaged 22mb/s , grinded away trying open browser...total garbage. hd bottleneck, use more ram too.

got parts in, , first thing first, upgraded bios a11 a17...big jump.

ram went in fine, mobo wasn't seeing hd. make long story short...a few parts later , "fabrication" made enclosure, got damn thing read in bios.

if guys have seen prices of old ide harddrives, you'll know can't 1 under $100. granted, they're on 100gb, downloading torrents move file server or photos , browsing, thing has come life ssd. hoping see 90mb/s advertised, settle 51mb/s avg. i'm getting.

install of 10.04 lts took of 20 minutes usb flash drive, , system boot time cut in half. browser opens small blip new ssd. can have multiple tabs open , run more 1 program @ once! yay!

moral of story, if can live 32gb primary hd, cheapest , best option on market. $86 32gb ide ssd capable of 90mb/s.

wow, awesome story. have latitude d610 1gig of ram , 1.73ghz m. thinking tonight how had become unbearably slow lately... think inspired, thanks.
