How do I make a symbol go away when I am done with it?

i have symbol pans onto screen when button pushed, , pans off screen when button pushed. problem after symbol slides away, can no longer click on buttons in area covering. i've tried can think of - sym$("name").hide(); doesn't work, sym.getsymbol("name").deletesymbol(); doesn't work either, , turning symbol's display off after playing doesn't work. doing wrong, , how fix this?

does changing z index help?

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
