can't import a JPEG: "video bit depth of this file is unsupported"

re above error message when attempting import premiere cs6 project.  used media info inspect file's properties per below. of video in project  8bit video. appreciated..

width                                        : 1 306 pixels

height                                       : 979 pixels

color space                             : yuv

bit depth                                   : 8 bits

compression mode                : lossy

stream size                              : 2.83 mib (100%)

open image in photoshop.  go image>mode... , change 8 bits/channel there.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
