Thread: Am I sane to think this would work?
hi,
i'm mulling on idea reduce monthly bills bringing few things in-house.
have 10.04.3 64bit server installed on little intel atom box @ home on couple of hours day receive ftp backup webhosting server , place dump desktop backups to. i'd put little more use.
vague plan bring following in-house (that pay $$ others host me):
1. eggdrop bot - sat on shell host
2. couple of under-visited websites ended having take vps of functionality uses persistent http connections - no-no on shared or reseller type plans.
3. possibly (later on if can improve upstream b/w) rather under-utilised shoutcast server sctrans based auto-dj setup.
naturally want separate stuff have on there away these new t'internet accessible things - best way go run virtual servers these new things?
i've used virtualbox quite lot gui , see has cli interface too.... give me separation need? i.e. there anyway if eggdrop gets compromised used escape confines of vbox access files?
have feeling want see if router support separate vlans lock these virtual boxes also... have feeling know enough working not enough securely
suggestions on other hypervisors etc welcome - comments on sanity

will work , can secure it. yes.
caveats - if talking virtualization might want little more oomph atom system have. comes power concerns , higher bills. not sure if you'd saving in end.
honestly, not bother virtualization instead move eggdrop , http sites server in home (if traffic low on sites). , save money on shell , vps.
wouldn't shoutcast because your'e going need considerably higher amount of bandwidth if you're talking saving money might not best idea.
far hypervisors recommend xen or kvm. kvm better supported in ubuntu, though run centos (or rhel if have access it) host , virtualize ubuntu if want guest. they're lighter on resources , considerably.
hope helps.
