Thread: Can i mix RAID 0 and RAID 5 on the same drives?

im thinking of reinstalling ubuntu machine , planning on making "better" use of drives have hanging around.

have 40gb sata drive, 2x250gb sata drives , 1 500gb drive.

use 500 gb drive backup ps3 films/games etc planning on leaving out of equasion (unless can convince me otherwise).

thinking of doing following:

40gb drive sda:

sda 1: 1gb boot grub2
sda 2: 3gb swap
sda 3: 30gb (ish) /data in raid 5
sda 4: 6gb non raid data

250gb drive sdb:

sdb1: 30gb (ish) /data in raid 5
sdb2: 220gb xubuntu install in raid 0

250gb drive sdc above.

im not sure if set work want really. im trying @ data fast , mirrored (hence raid5) os has speed available in raid0 (not bothered mirroring here).

ideal go , buy 250gb drive , raid 5 volumes im trying make best use of have hanging around.

help, suggestions welcome.
