Thread: Excess heat and battery drain with Unbuntu 11.10

hi there, reading first post

having grown tired of m****soft , nonsense decided i'd try unbuntu 11.10 on hp pavilion g6 series laptop. i've installed , connected internet through router without trouble , initial impression running reasonably experiencing lot of heat , short battery life. machine sitting idling nothing using significant cpu in system monitor.

did googling , found number of reports of similar behaviour , possible solution here which have followed. i've learned few things finding way round unbuntu after hour or of idling can see there has been no change t heat issue.

1 thing have noticed heat seems concentrated in same area gets hotter when watching video while or other graphics intensive task. bottom left of keyboard seemingly centred around ctrl key. have no idea what's under there hazard guess graphics chip round there somewhere issue may graphics related.

i've had no such issues while using windows, other when graphics have been working hard while don't think it's hardware issue.

did read somewhere of there being graphics related bug causing similar behaviour there no solution given in thread advice appreciated.

do have proprietary video drivers installed? have better power management open source drivers.
video card in laptop?
way, spelled ubuntu wrong.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
