Thread: Making VLC default player and removing software

i'm running ubuntu 11.10 gnome 3. i've gone system settings > system info > default programs , set vlc default program audio , video, whenever open video file opens totem movie player.

i've considered uninstalling totem, message

code:
to remove movie player, these items must removed well: gnome desktop environment - essential components
along couple plugins.

last time removed software , got message gnome essential components, when rebooted, ubuntu wouldn't load - sat @ load screen. i'm not sure if problem related uninstall of programs, i'd figure out how remove software don't use epiphany or totem without possibly screwing system.

questions are:
1) how can make vlc default video player, aside going default programs?
2) how can uninstall unnecessary software without breaking system?

thanks!

okay, figured out how make vlc default program. right-clicked on video file , selected properties>open , selected vlc default player. still odd didn't work under system settings>default programs.

still have issue of possibility of removing unnecessary programs , breaking system.
