Thread: Very long network name when mapped to ubuntu from XP

hi all,

sorry been noob on , apologize if qns has been asked.

setup:
ubuntu server 11.04 / ubuntuserver(hostname) ip: 192.168.102.248

shared folder name "public" comments "public shared folder"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

client machine - windows xp professional sp3
type "\\ubuntuserver" or \\192.168.102.248" on explorer

new windows pop , see shared folder call public comments above.

when map "public" shared folder z: drive, system give me long network name(below):

public on 'ubuntuserver server (samba, ubuntu) (192.168.102.248 '(z: )

create couple of other shared folder different name , mapped drive letter, result still same.

test on 'ubuntuserver server (samba, ubuntu) (192.168.102.248'(y: )
ops on 'ubuntuserver server (samba, ubuntu) (192.168.102.248'(x: )


is possible have shorter netwrk drive name i.e "public on ubuntuserver(z: ) upon after completion of mapping? those done in windows between pc pc or pc server example: "shareddocs on 'asuspc'(p: )

please advise & in advance

sure possible! click mapped drive > press f2 (or right-click > rename) >> change name want.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
