Thread: Networking Clarity

somehow i've gotten want work, don't know how/why. clarity on following.

desired set static ip address on ubuntu server remote in computer upstairs. server running ubuntu 10.04 lts. read in order set static ip, must edit /etc/network/interfaces. don't understand then, point of system > preferences > network connections. set static ip in there , did not change /etc/network/interfaces file. ifconfig shows computer having desired static ip address, system > preferences > network connections connection set automatic dhcp.

furthermore confusing me how editing ip address on computer fits in setting static ip address on router. i'm using linksys wrt150n dd-wrt v24. reserve ip appropriate mac address. necessary set static ip in both locations or 1 or what?

if wasn't enough, xubuntu computer working differently. it's /etc/network/interfaces file set
code:
auto lo iface lo inet loopback
, settings > network connections static ip set, , seems working completely.

between 2 computers, both have successful static ip's, set in opposite ways. can clarify why things do/don't work?

it's simpler have router set static ip. hosts dhcp server assign ips connected boxes. on static, linksys assign same, specified ip address device mac address. on dynamic, address next available , can vary.

set computers automatic ip , have router manage rest. 1 case want set interface-side static ip gain few microseconds on initial network connection.
