Thread: New to Linux, some beginner questions

hello, have been running ubuntu 11.10 alongside windows 7 (using wubi) few days , amazed on how fast, secure , easy use (i'm starting love terminal, prettier windows cmd), i'm planning shrink c:\ drive 400 gb make 100 gb partition ubuntu, , see if can replace windows make ubuntu primary os.

have researched replacing windows ubuntu (what i've learned every aspect there open-source solution/alternative windows programs), , take jump, have 1 solely question: gaming? have researched wine , playonlinux, have read overall gaming performance not in windows. how difference? use desktop gaming important point consider. actually, games play on ubuntu battlefield 3 , steam games (not valve, games require steam client run)

system specs:
cpu intel core 2 quad q9400 @ 2.6 ghz
4gb ddr2 800mhz corsair
asus sriker ii formula motherboard
2x nvidia gtx 260 running in sli (my monitor resolution 1920x1080)
500gb sata ii 7200rpmhdd ( windows + linux)
1tb sata ii 7200 rpm hdd (games , storage)

have heard ubuntu gaming edition. difference, except comes wine , other apps preinstalled? gaming performace improvement?

the difference year (thus high-end games of last year start stupported). wine can have problems directx since exclusiveley made windows, games might not run because .dll files missing. if plan switch os, not entireley. current setup looks this:

got 1,5 tb hdd
gave ubuntu 100 gb
gave windows 100 gb
, set shared partition rest of space install windows games , store music, downloads, videos both oss. (note: have no swap because 8 gb ram more enough )

stripped windows not need gaming...so first installed drivers, deleted non-relevant: browsers, antivirus, lan-drivers (to cut off internet), , programs...so thing left games, drivers them , thats it.

else ubuntu. should go dualboot keep best form both worlds.
