Thread: What can I do to speed up an older laptop?

hello everyone. using older gateway laptop when away home. not main computer. has these specs:

intel celeron m 1.5ghz
1.2gb ram
20gb hdd

running ubuntu 10.04lts hard drive has 14.1gb free. use watching dvds, internet, email, etc. can speed without spending if money on it? again use laptop when away home few times year....it backup laptop speak. help.

the main boost came ram added. 1-2gb great purposes. if want feel more responsive stop using full desktop environment , use instead window manager. if interesting, @ openbox, fvwm-crystal, fluxbox, or metacity. can little harder configure desktop environments worth speed.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings. how do I change the e-mail address for my merchant account
