Thread: What exactly is "support" and "End of life date" ?

hello,

releases wiki article talks "support" , "end of life date". clarify meant terms. looks terms mean same, or "end of life" equals "end of support". so?

assumed "support" term means period of time during ubuntu developers keep releasing minor patches security , compatibility of software packages constituting particular ubuntu release. long don't need new features , ready take risks living without new security , compatibility patches continue use old ubuntu releases indefinitely, thought. but, looks not case?!

have installed ubuntu 9.04 (jaunty) on older system, discover can't install or update through update manager nor apt-get. sum frustration:

1. "end of life" , "support" stand for? (the same?)

2. there meaningful way use ubuntu release past "end of life"? how can 1 install/update packages in such system (from cd/dvd, presumably)?

3. can dvd of ubuntu 9.04? (i386, desktop or alternate) there should have been dvds, see cds left on mirrors.

yes.

it's possible, not advisable machine that's connected internet because, mention, won't security updates. if there's vulnerability in package on system that's found after support ends won't fix , target.

there's nothing stop installing .deb packages on system though, long package manager can satisfy dependencies.

doesn't still on download pages, if can find can provide md5 hash jaunty dvd might able find elsewhere on internet (torrent?).
