Moving part of a catalog to network drive.
i need advice catalog of 13k+ photos i'm trying clean up. i'm using elements 7, have purchased elements 11, , planning install soon. part of photos physically located on hard drive, , part on network drive mapped j:. elements finds these photos on j: don't think elements catalog aware j: network drive/removable drive. looks them every time open elements, making program slow start up. should use "move removable drive" move these photos? how elements treat these photos have been sent removable disk? still able see thumbnails of photos , search through tags them? if copy photos new drive, still call drive j: elements able find them? , finally, if perform "move removable disk" task, should elements 7 or update elements 11 first? please help. joanne

if organizer slow start , seems searching, should check 2 things:
- have not set 'watched folders' service @ network drive (file/watched folders menu)
- in preferences, files, don't have checked automatic search , reconnection.
if can access files on network drive organizer , see thumbnails, no need worry. can move files internal drive , network 1 file / move menu or dragging , dropping folders in folder view. organizer should not consider network drive differently external usb drive : if such drive not physically connected, you'll 'missing files'. thumbnails stored in catalog show. it's different files on cd/dvd : if not connected, you'll offline media warning.
only catalog (the database) cannot stored on network drive; can stored on usb external drive.
if want upgrade pse11, sure make full backup on second external drive (such usb drives affordable today). note backup, able restore files not on original location, in custom location, instance in internal drive of computer (even if original files scattered on several internal or external drives).
if install pse11 on present computer, should prompted convert existing catalog(s) new pse11 format without having files or folders move or copy. conversion not change present pse7 catalog, still working before.
