Thread: boot failure after shutdown during upgrade

so, decided bite bullet , upgrade 11.10 10.04. loaded 10.10 on usb drive , after annoying prompts enter disc didn't have, unchecked option software sources.

in middle of update 10.10 on laptop (without power cord) , computer shut down in middle of update. now, when trying access linux os, freezes @ purple loading screen (after dots colored.) when trying access both recovery mode , previous kernels, freeze in blank/black screen.

fortunately, dual booting (well, triple, that's beside point) using win7 partition right now.

how resolve issue while keeping settings/files/etc. there way can patch/repair update?

do have /home on separate partition? because guess need new install. can use live cd recover personal files, if not separate, if keep /home. less worry about.

realize perform distro upgrade no power asking trouble?!

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
