hi.

don't want start religious war, because that's seems happen whenever asks recommendations or direction when comes c programming, @ least in other forums i've browsed. so, i'll try specific can:

i'm reading "ansi c programming language, 2nd ed." brian w kernighan , dennis m. ritchie. book has laid out pretty decent framework me start developing simple console applications (i'm still reading). question in how transition console applications windowed applications. don't want learn language @ point, i'm still struggling c, i'd stick it's constructs , i've learned far. many recommendations i've seen on other websites suggest learning c++ or c# @ point, not ready, , not interested.

have done object oriented programming in pascal in past, palm os, , vb stuff way in day, that's it. understand x11 window manager ubuntu? (i'm using lubuntu right now). how make natural progression learning basic constructs of c making simple "hello world" window apps?

gui programming in gnu/linux, e.g. ubuntu, not require programming language. have written gnome/gtk apps in c. prefer c++, c works fine. should research toolkits desktop plan write apps for. lubuntu (lxde desktop) appears use gtk+.
