Thread: Triple boot with 64 Studio

does ubuntu studio 11.10 have unity interface?
there performance/efficiency penalty using ubuntu studio on 64 studio?

reason i'm asking because purchased 1 of these used dell d630 (pp18l) laptops coming off lease, , want video editing on it. scenes shouldn't longer 2 minutes @ 1080p. laptop dual-core, 80gb, 2 gb ram - supports 8 - , think might put win 8 on when rtm comes out. (right it's running xp.)

i'm thinking have 3 partitions on it.
1 windows, other 2 linux: ubuntu 11.10 desktop, , 64 studio. studio has out of box real-time kernel support. don't know means(!), think might me movie editing, machine. wikipedia says ubuntu studio no longer has real-time kernel capability. moreover, 64 studio offers paid email support. canonical offer paid support ubuntu studio?

if created 2 empty partitions in addition windows on there (there no restore partition) the(debian) 64 studio installer ask me of 2 empty partitions wanted put on? , i'm thinking finish ubuntu 11.10 installation, defaults empty partition? of course, want os options in grub menu.

end up, then, 3 primary partitions, , 2 swaps, think.

installation scheme sound might work?

there how-to anywhere on triple boot configurations/installations: windows/linux/linux?

in advance,
scott

hi there! no, studio won't getting unity - ofcourse able install if wish, plan of project move on xfce4 instead of gnome uses fewer resources, leaving more available high ram editing intended for!

okay next triple booting-

easiest way
1 set drive (obviously) recommend number of partitions set thus-

1 primary windows - it's unclear how many primary partitions windows 8 use, vista , 7 used 2 default, 8 meant using secure boot, i'd imagine it'll still 2 - make 1 formatted ntfs - windows installer split itself.

rest of drive format extended partition using gparted live cd. extended partition create partitions. minimum you'd need 2x 15gb ubuntu's , 2gb swap partition. i'd recommend creating data partition formatted ntfs - somewhere can store docs , things each os can access.

in terms of using them - install windows first, ubuntu version use least. when partitioning, choose "something else" , select 1 of partitions linux, format ext4 , mount point /. says put bootloader - need change /dev/sda number chose format - not sda. after install, reboot - windows load , wont have option ubuntu - right.

repeat install ubuntu use primarily, format , mount other partion same before, time let install bootloader /dev/sda time configure bootloader 3 os , when restart should tripple booting

best
