Thread: Wanting to build a home server

hi guys,

have acer easystore running whsv1. works need do, want more space. planning on building considerably more space, have same drive extender feature (or same thing) included in whsv1.

current options following:

amahi
ubuntu?
windows server 2008 r2
windows home server 2011 stablebit drivepool or drive bender

suggestions recommend do? server used streaming media multiple devices @ same time, backups , accessing data remotely. use new server vpn/ssh , other things well, shouldn't impact decision on operating system use. @ moment leaning more towards amahi, if have suggestions me else please let me know.

don't mind getting down , dirty cli, drive extender type function mission critical. avoid hardware raid. recommend?

in advance!

to honest it, if trying set go grab 1 of countless multi-disk file servers/sans small office/home office (soho) out there. there lots of combinations, several of offered on each variant. these networked drive array options raid , sort of limited server tools.

there's pretty chance 1 wind running sort of linux, set you, including streaming media. or buy 1 , wipe firmware, installing own linux.

there's pretty chance if build own cost more 1 of commercially available systems, physically bigger , noisier. , use more power. , not handy comes stock on san units.

on other hand, if you're interested in learning how either professional experience or curiosity means go ahead. i've done few myself.
