Create/update consecutively-numbered markers?

i have 200+-page cs5 document in need place several hundred consecutively-numbered markers. there may anywhere 0 12 markers on page, , must numbered left-to right, top bottom beginning end of document. have insert or delete markers, requiring subsequent markers renumbered.

 

does require script, or footnoting? or outlining? wouldn't have link text boxes make either of work?

 

i have done smaller documents had manually number/renumber every marker, in document size, take hours.

 

i comfortable programming, , have slight familiarity javascript, not clue start this. pointers appreciated.

i'm not sure mean "markers". if mean need number

certain paragraphs, take @ "line numbers" script on

www.freelancebookdesign.com (under scripting tab).

 

it has several options makes flexible -- including

numbering paragraph styles, consecutive numbering throughout

document, etc.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
