Thread: PXE for Office Network - Pre-Deployment HELP!
i moving new larger office. such, need add 6 computers support them. so, want pxe server or "preboot execution environment" environment boot computers using network interface independently of data storage devices (like hard disks) or installed operating systems.
here's idea:
why pxe sounds me:
- shared storage - no need buy 6 new individual hdds, pricey right now
- only need maintain 1 install, instead of manage 12
- backup 1 resource regularly, instead of 12
- everyone's on same platform
found this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/pxeinstallserver
additional things want provide:
- network printing
- network scanning - have brother mfc printer/scanners
- ftp scanning of documents
have never before installed pxe. bit of stretch skillset, doesn't insurmountable.
bit of more willing use them , recreate guide others may find in spot.
specific questions:
have suggestions me manage setup?
kinds of resources should have before building pxe server?
there additional resources overlooking?
sure, have financial resources buy new computers/servers/processors/etc necessary. so, if there's particular piece of equipment helps, let me know. any/all appreciated!
it sounds looking server/thin client set-up, clients light-weight computers , processing , data on server.
thin clients booted minimal operating system located on small drives (e.g. hdd, cdrom or whatever) on each client, or can pixie boot tftp server on network.
having locally installed client operating system quite simple setup , maintain, use same linux "disk image" on clients.
suggest start taking @ thinstation site: http://thinstation.org/
i've deployed thinstation rdp access windows 2008 server, , works well, long can find right network driver client hardware (i understand new v2.5beta has better support). site should have info on pxe , tftp, place start. have helpful forum.

hope of helps.
