bought usb wireless stick longer distances (wl-1600usb).

installed driver (i hope sucessfuly) rtl8187 (http://linuxwireless.org/)

problem not see device in either iwconfig or ifconfig (as expecting wlan1 or so...)

where did download file compiled? compat-wireless-2.6.tar.bz2?? i'd examine , build myself.
