Thread: External monitor problems with laptop
i have dell precision m6500 laptop 2 x 24" dell monitors connected via docking station. graphics card nvidia quadro fx2800m.
has been ok (except manually setting displays in nvidia x-server settings) when running ubuntu 10.10, when upgraded 11.10 can't external monitors work.
nvidia x settings hangs when try enable 2nd external display, , way reset restart of computer. somehow works 1 display, changed desktop settings.
have found posts same problem on other forums, far have been unsuccessful in finding real solutions. there seems work-arounds desktop computers, don't idea of having edit xorg.conf , reboot every time un-dock laptop.
know solutions? suggestions welcome!
i have had same issues m6500 2 monitors connected dock. in nvidia x server settings, have process every time put mine on dock before start other programs.
1) set 1 of dock monitors twinview
2) disable integrated lcd
3) enable last monitor making sure position right of or left of primary
4) set check box 1 of dock monitors primary
5) click enable - doesn't take have try again.
1 thing never save x-configuration. if when not docked have copy backup xorg.conf file on running 1 , reboot.
have tried many things os see dock monitors primary monitors, however, never works. bios , grub sees them , uses monitor in port 1 primary, when login ubuntu shows monitor goes black , second 1 says there no signal. have open laptop, if forgot open it, , go through settings outlined above.
if can give workaround might work, happy try it. have tried 2 xorg.conf files , using rc.d check components on dock , copy corresponding file on if sees or doesn't see components, doesn't work.
