How to SIGNIFICANTLY shorten silence with CS6

my old cool edit pro2 had helpful feature. in recording narration track keep waveform moving , recording though there numerous quiet, virtually silent periods of anywhere perhaps 5 30 seconds. afterwards select entire waveform, specify in box, 3 seconds, hit enter (i think) , quiet spots reduced 3 seconds while narration remained intact.

 

can done cool edit pro’s eventual successor, adobe audition cs6? can come is  file section on shortening have not been able job.

 

i have tried effects>diagnostics>delete silence (process)>settings +

find levels , shortening silence. brings no change whatever in highlighted waveform. what’s activating step?  (have missed steps?) feature seems deal in milliseconds , may not seek.

while "shorten" option in millisecond units, can enter 3000.  then, apply modifications, click delete button @ top of list of detected silent regions.
