Thread: Cross platform office setup with Ubuntu server, Ubuntu clients and Mac clients

hi guys,

how doing?

unofficial network admin @ ad agency work , when set server office couple of months ago decided go ubuntu. because there no virus headaches , once ubuntu set runs no problems.

server acts as:
  1. a gateway internet
  2. a web server our wiki , project management software


trying set server wins server users can log in , access own shares.

hit major bump.

since small startup, of staff bring own laptops in work. can't reinstall oss , configure them work server. fileshare idea went bust.

now, we've made profit! , we're buying new equipment including computers our staff.

i'll have staff except designers on ubuntu. designers on macs.

know story (and aren't asleep), questions:

  • how set ubuntu client has login server? can't seem find documentation anywhere.
  • is possible macs login server can access shares same way?
  • can map these users users , groups on server have more control of access various shares , services?


other plans have server include chat server, backup solution (with bacula), , print server, there plenty of documentation on these should ok.

i'm trying avoid windows because have lot of virus issues here.

have read server guide , has helped me immensely. however, more geared towards windows clients , doesn't ubuntu clients

have looked @ samba yet? if looking way connect server on lan, 1 way. macs , ubuntu can clients. if looking connect samba on wan need supplement vpn openvpn.

way, works both on lan , wan, sshfs. not mutually exclusive samba. usual posix (rwx) permissions.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings. how do I change the e-mail address for my merchant account
