Thread: Graphics card/Driver help needed (nVidia and Ubuntu Lucid)

i purchased new graphics card quite time ago , after sending computer in servicing (i convinced faulty motherboard issue), have learnt issue ubuntu (or more accurately, installation), because when ran linux mint 11 livecd, it's hardware jockey recognized card immediately, in installation, hardware jockey tells me there "no proprietary drivers in use on system"!

here's pertinent details:
motherboard asus m4a89gtd pro/usb3.
did fresh install of ubuntu 10.04, @ time didn't have new graphics card (an msi gts450), fresh install done while using onboard ati graphics (radeon hd 4290). i'm using open source drivers, have tried out ati's drivers repeatedly on last year, or (hoping @ point provide date version).

please, tell me don't need fresh install solve issue.

tonne in advance.

the distributors of ubuntu believe in free open source software (foss) philosophy. ubuntu not install closed source or proprietary software default or standard. other linux distributors have no such qualms.

ubuntu @ installation time asks if want install proprietary codecs licensed ubuntu. video drivers install them after installation using utility called additional drivers.

in case installed ubuntu ati video card , have put in nvidia card. can see problem? ubuntu recognised card alright , correct in saying there not proprietary drivers in use. again remember couple of years getting message on system when knew using nvidia driver. message faulty.

so, have nvidia driver installed , additional drivers utility driver activated? when install nvidia driver installs nvidia x-server settings utility. have 1 of those?

regards.
