Thread: i'm concerned and considering to "do" linux from scratch

ok, installed ubuntu 11.10
unity appeared great, decided install xfce (xubuntu environment) did not find basic task in unity.
i'm playing ubuntu few days , i'm noticing high, have low.

best thing speed, laptop (a normal emachines 2gb laptop) happy windows 7 became elephant in few months (i can't happened when launched java application, unbearable).
i'm doing usual tasks did using windows xp , seven, i'm find too, many buggy applications, or i'm not able use them or use whole linux (it'd normal guess), or kind of installation (xfce "over" unity) buggy in itself.
window applications disappear , can't recover them, install application , never launch, or launch , doesn't appear nothing.

i'm worried hoping ubuntu fast alternative windows i'm doubting after enthusiastic begin.

, considering understand how use linux best approach "linux scratch" , not ubuntu (i hoping join both souls, window , shell commands here) because feel lost , don't know if can guess right route , learn new (for me) operating system.

consider have small background on programming (and still learning) , not totally "ignorant" , don't think need simplest thing findable ubuntu be, because i'm supposing ubuntu simple, cost authomatize me making me lazy.

have add 1 thing: find in net many guides, tutorial, everytime feel mechanic , can't full understand how things work. , man command seem don't think 1 can allow himself "guess" what's right command particular task googling necessary.
i'm saying thing "ps aux | grep appname" see if application running... find ps googling or there's way research of knowledge offline?
