Thread: No GUI, no shutdown and no internet ...please help!

while waiting replies earlier post ("various problems") figured there'd no harm doing fresh install of ubuntu 10.04 on separate (sata) drive. if can functioning i've got base work in dealing other issues.the fresh install seemed go smoothly (i used same cd used successful install on partner's pc few days ago) after updating grub on main drive, booted new install , encountered following problems. or welcome:

1. booting produces text login, resulting in text prompt. after searching solutions, found startx did trick session, when reboot i'm text again. how ensure boots directly graphical mode every time?

2. once startx had produced gnome desktop, went reboot , discovered although there's familiar logout/shutdown icon, clicking on produces no menu. have reboot using terminal. how graphical logout/shutdown/etc process working properly?

3. (i suspect 1 may less straightforward.) on few occasions i've had working version of ubuntu on drive (sdd) it's been unable connect internet. firefox can't find servers, nor can update manager or software centre. connection/hardware ok - while have problems main ubuntu installation on sda, connect, , xp on same drive fine internet-wise. how should go troubleshooting connectivity on fresh installation on sdd?

advice appreciated ...
