How does Photoshop blend layers when stitching panoramas?

when make panoramas in photoshop cs6 (after selecting , preparing individual images in lr4), wish modify photoshop's automatic blending of layers.  example when moving person in 2 or more adjacent frames & wish use version different frame ps selects.  layer masks either pure white or pure black, selecting portions of each frame used, no gray portions blending.  opacity of layers 100%.  so, other invisible-to-me mechanism being used seamlessly blend layers.  when try select portions of different frame (in areas of overlap) painting white on mask , black on layer masks above in stack, can partially make visible desired area appears partially transparent & low contrast.  how can full control of included in final composite?

the selection of pixels go final image appears done white or black mask, , recent versions masks overlap bit can things resize image or whatever before merging them , not have transparent edges show up.

for blending, though, believe photomerge alters colors of image pixels of each layer match colors.  makes difficult or near impossible manually tidy results.  find if have mis-alignment need different input data (like match exposures better in camera raw or something) photomerge more stitch them.  i've never had luck trying adjust things after fact.

frankly it's wondered whether they'd polish , make better someday.
