Thread: How to keep users & groups when resinstall & move /home to new partition?

hi - running out of storage space , want install new larger hdd replace 1 of 2 existing internal hdds in system.

plan use new hdd /home ( following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/pa...ng/home/moving) , once /home been moved on new hdd, reinstall ubuntu onto remaining existing hdd.

different current set second hdd used rsync backup copies (going forward backups on external hdd or nas).

want have /home on separate drive & partition able maintain users settings, files, if want (re)install ubuntu or switch distro.

question if reinstall ubuntu how can maintain current users settings including , groups & privileges? (so users can continue use /home now).

/ pointers.

simply......add them in same order.

important thing have same uid , gid.

type
code:
less /etc/passwd
scroll down bottom , see users have created starting 1 created during installation this
code:
nothingspecial:x:1000:1000
the next user 1001:1001 , next 1002:1002 , on.

if create users in order numbers climb 1000 on wards have same uid , gid before , there should no problem.
