well. tried using commands remove virtual box 4.0 different problem involving kernel error in need re download , reinstall virtual box 4.0. right clicked on app , selected uninstall , got error:

e: malformed line 12 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist)
e: list of sources not read.
go repository dialog correct problem.
e: _cache->open() failed, please report.

same exact error when try open synaptic package manager. idk if right thread question, didn't want start entirely brand new thread.

post moved own thread.

when in doubt, start new thread. "thread hijacking" frowned upon.

can post output of command? you've apparently got typo or in sources.list file.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
