Download unsuccessful

we recieved notice requesting download latest version xi of adobe reader.  run windows 7.  did update said there patch installed it.  said upgrade successful.  re-booted computer.  after re-boot , trying adobe reader open pdf try's goes dark grey screen.  removed adobe reader , tried again.  samething.  can not open pdf still same dark grey screen.  once dark grey screen open won't close unless shut down system.  have suggestions how fix it.

can open adobe reader itself?  if so, try disabling protected mode [edit | preferences | security (enhanced)].

 

if not resolve problem, display adapter, device driver version & date?  see http://forums.adobe.com/thread/945765

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
