I am having Problems Importing photos to LR4

why lr4 not import photos selected folder on portable hard drive?  "include subfolders" checked , "suspected duplicates" allowed.  difference 10,000 photos per info windows exployer (approx. 175,000 vs 185,000 files).  can view missing photos in exployer , not in lr4.  have tried deleting catalog , starting scratch.  have tried importing subfolders.  different results, not different.  can offer.
